QB Desktop and POS fail to open following Microsoft update for Win 7 and Server 2008 r2.

QuickBooks Desktop and Point of Sale fail to open following Microsoft update for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2

From Intuit:

Update:

2/23/18 - We have identified a recent Microsoft patch preventing QuickBooks Desktop products from opening on Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 computers. The patch is no longer available via Windows update.

QuickBooks Desktop products may not function properly while these updates are installed. Consult your IT professional to remove patch KB4074805. If you are still experiencing the issue, you may have to uninstall patch KB4073701 as well.

We are actively working with Microsoft for a resolution.  For the latest updates, please subscribe to this article.   Our next scheduled update on this issue will be on  2/28/2018.

Thank you for your patience as we work through this.

What you may be experiencing:

Customers are reporting QuickBooks Desktop, (US, CA and UK versions) and QuickBooks Point of Sale are crashing during launch on Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 computers.

Important: This issue only applies to Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2.  If you are using Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, or Server 2012/2016 please see QuickBooks Desktop won't open, has stopped working, or not responding for further steps.

  • QuickBooks Desktop US: “QuickBooks has Stopped Working”
  • QuickBooks Point of Sale: "Application Encountered an Error"
  • QuickBooks Desktop CA/UK: "Abnormal Program Termination"
Microsoft released preview update  KB4074805 for .NET Framework which appears to have caused this issue.

How can I rename Quick Pick Groups in QB POS v 12?

Some of you may have noticed that an update caused an issue with creating new Quick Pick Groups and assigning them a name.

While waiting for a resolution, here is a work around that will allow you to rename the group once it is created.

  1. Create the new Group. It will appear with the name New Group.
  2. Open Notepad. In notepad, type in the new name for the Group.
  3. Highlight the new name in Notepad, right click and choose Copy.
  4. In POS, Right Click the “New Group” and choose Rename Group.
  5. Right Click the highlighted group name, choose Paste, then hit the Enter key on the keyboard.

You can now Right click the Group and change the color if you wish. To get the color to stay, open the Group and add an item. Once the item is selected, click on it so that it adds to the open receipt.

Doing this appears to solidify the changes.

This is a work around until such time as the Quick Pick items are fixed in the normal updates.

.NET 4.X needed to install updates on QB POS v 12.

Questions on the software? Call us at 800-609-0788

Older computers that are updating to QB POS v 12 may see a message that .NET Framework 4.1 is needed.

Clicking on the solution brings a blank page.

You can correct this by going to the Microsoft website and downloading and installing the .NET Framework 4.6.

You can reach the site here:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53345

Run the installer, and accept the terms. This should install a version of the .NET Framework that will allow the program to update successfully.

Now that EMV is here, have you edited the receipt templates in QB POS?

Questions on the software? Call us at 800-609-0788!

EMV is a new US credit card payment standard meant to make credit transactions more secure.  "EMV" stands for Europay, MasterCard, and Visa - the developers of this standard.

EMV cards feature smart chips which encrypt data for every sale, making card transactions more secure.  These cards are designed to be inserted into the reader and remain in place throughout the entire transaction.

Along with this change, there are new industry standards for the information contained on receipts.  The default 40 column and Letter receipt templates are EMV compliant.  If you use a modified template, make sure to add the fields required for EMV compliance.

List of required fields:

  • Body Header:
    • Transaction Date & Time
    • Transaction Type & Number
    • Store
    • Workstation
    • Store Name
    • Store Address
  • Body:
    • Tender Amount Information (includes total and masked card number)
    • Tender Credit Card Name
    • Expiration Date
    • Tender Reference
    • Entry Mode (Chip, Chip/Swiped, Manual, or Swiped)
    • Tender Merchant Information
    • Tender Signature Line
    • Card AID
    • Retention Reminder

To add fields to a custom receipt template:

  1. Go to File > Tools > Print Designer.
  2. From the Available Templates list, double-click your receipt template to open it.
  3. Click the Add button and choose Data Field or Group of Fields.  Add any fields from the list above that aren't already on your template.

When doing a store exchange you receive the message :

175137: Store "xxx", A received XML file contains invalid information or structure. Unable to process. File: xxxxxxx.qbt

What is happening?

There is a difference in the formats of the exchange file that prevents it from processing .

What is causing this?

The most common cause is that one of the locations is on an older release of the software.

At each location go to Help, Software Update, Check for updates.

If an update is available, install it .

Then try processing again.
